Indiana (IHSAA) Releases 2026 and 27 HS Football Sectional Assignments

North central football programs alongside teams across Indiana are preparing for significant sectional realignments that will reshape their competitive paths. The Indiana (IHSAA) Releases 2026 and 2027 High School Football Sectional Assignments have arrived, fundamentally altering how schools compete for postseason glory. The IHSAA Executive Committee approved sectional assignments in six team sports for the next two school years, with a 32-member committee representing all three IHSAA districts and every classification leading the realignment effort. We’ll break down the major changes in Class 6A sectionals, explore how the 2026 and 2027 High School Football Sectional Assignments impact indiana high school football programs across all classifications, as well as examine what these shifts mean for competitive balance statewide.

IHSAA Announces 2026 and 2027 High School Football Sectional Assignments

The IHSAA released new sectional alignments for high school football during its monthly meeting, setting the stage for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years. The Executive Committee unanimously approved recommendations from realignment committees that convened earlier in the month.

These new sectional assignments take effect starting in Fall 2026 and run through Spring 2028. The realignment impacts six IHSAA sports with multi-class postseasons, including boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer, and girls volleyball. Baseball and softball alignments will be reviewed following the 2026 season.

The Realignment Committee made adjustments based on the movement of teams to higher and lower classes, driven by enrollment numbers and success factor calculations. A 19-person board of directors, elected by member school principals, governs the organization that serves 412 member high schools across public, institutional, parochial, and private sectors.

The IHSAA operates as a voluntary, not-for-profit organization that remains self-supporting without tax monies. Member schools pay no annual membership fee or entry fees to compete in the Association’s tournaments. The organization conducts state tournament series annually in 24 sports, comprising 11 for girls, 11 for boys, and two co-ed sports.

What Are the Major Changes in Class 6A Sectionals?

Class 6A sectionals underwent substantial restructuring that places several powerhouse programs on collision courses earlier in the postseason. Section 3 now features Carmel, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern and Westfield. This grouping creates intense battles among some of the state’s largest and most successful programs. Westfield finished as runner-up in Class 6A for the second straight year, while Carmel also ranks among the state’s elite programs.

Brownsburg, the defending Class 6A champion, remains in Section 5 and will be joined by Avon, Ben Davis and Zionsville. This represents a significant change from the previous alignment where Zionsville competed in Section 3 alongside Carmel, Harrison (West Lafayette) and Westfield. Zionsville shifts from the north to the south, landing in Sectional 5.

Pike moves into Sectional 6 alongside Lawrence North, Lawrence Central and North Central (Indianapolis). Decatur Central relocates to Sectional 7 with Franklin Central, Perry Meridian, Southport and Warren Central. Franklin Central joins Center Grove, Columbus North, Jeffersonville and Whiteland in Sectional 8. These shifts stem from enrollment numbers and success factor calculations that drove teams to higher and lower classes.

How Do Sectional Assignments Break Down Across All Classifications?

The 2026 and 2027 High School Football Sectional Assignments distribute schools across six classifications based on enrollment figures. Class 5A features 33 schools organized into eight sectionals, with reigning state champion New Palestine and Cathedral remaining together in Sectional 13, joined by Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) and Pendleton Heights. Fort Wayne programs Fort Wayne Snider, Fort Wayne South Side and Fort Wayne Wayne compete in Sectional 11 alongside Warsaw Community.

Class 4A encompasses 62 schools across 24 sectionals. Sectional 20 brings together Delta, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, Jay County, Kokomo, Logansport, Marion, Muncie Central and Yorktown. Similarly, Class 3A includes 61 schools divided among 16 sectionals. Adams Central, Bellmont, Bluffton, Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran, Garrett, Heritage, Norwell and Woodlan form Sectional 27.

Class 2A contains 62 schools in 16 sectionals. Sectional 37 features Christel House, Covenant Christian, Eastern Hancock, Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter, Indianapolis Lutheran, Indianapolis Scecina Memorial, Park Tudor and Triton Central. Class 1A rounds out the alignments with 62 schools across 16 sectionals. Sectional 44 groups Churubusco, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Fremont, Northfield, South Adams, Southern Wells, Southwood and Whitko.

Given these points, the sectional realignments fundamentally reshape Indiana high school football competition for the next two years. Most important, Class 6A programs face heightened challenges as traditional powerhouses now meet earlier in postseason play. Similarly, schools across all six classifications must adapt their strategies based on new sectional groupings. We expect these assignments to test competitive balance while creating compelling matchups that will define championship paths through 2028. The changes take effect Fall 2026, giving programs ample time to prepare.
